Pogoda w Rzeszowie

History

The beginnings of Rzeszów Airport date back to the years of German occupation, when in 1940 a new runway (1200m long x 40m wide) was constructed in Jasionka for the purposes of war.

At the close of the war, in 1944 the German occupants left the airport completely demolished. The same year it was taken over by the Russian Red Army. In 1949, by the decision of the temporary government PKWN (the Polish National Committee of Liberation) Civil Aviation Department it was reconstructed and put into operation.

1959 marks a breakthrough in the history of our airport. The operation of the airport was taken over from PLL "LOT" (Polish Airlines “LOT”) by ZRL and LK (Air Traffic and Commercial Airports Administration). Since then the airport has been continuously modernized - ranging from the new airport building construction, airside apron, taxiway, runway to the air traffic control tower.

At that time, as well as, in the 70-ties the air services between Warsaw, Gdańsk, Poznań, Koszalin, Wrocław and Szczecin boosted, handling 100 000 passengers per year. Since April 1974 Rzeszów - Jasionka has been recognized as the international airport, acting as a support for Warsaw Okęcie. In 1987 "Polish Airports" State Enterprise (PPL) was established and since then it has operated all the communication airports in the country. Till the end of June, 2009, Rzeszów Airport was included in the PPL structure.

The aviation sector was bearing the brunt of the economic breakdown in the beginning of the 90-ties. Despite the new arrival-departure hall being constructed, Polish Airlines "LOT" suspended the regular connection between Rzeszów and Warsaw. The airport's plight was getting worse. Noticeable changes and the gradual growth of air traffic dynamics began at the end of 90-ties. At first the chartered cargo and passenger connections with Azerbaijan and then Georgia were launched as the result of which Rzeszów Airport became the leader of freight shipment among the group of domestic airports. In 1966 Polish Airlines “LOT” renewed regular connection with Warsaw. Considering the constant, successive development of Rzeszów –Jasionka, one cannot ignored new heavy investments such as a new administrative - technical base, petrol station and - above all – the refurbished and extended runway (3200 meter long and 45 meter wide), the second apron, as well as, taxiway. In the near future, new passenger terminal with the ultimate capacity of about 1440 pax/hour in the third stage of works is supposed to be constructed.

Currently regular flights are operated by three carriers: Polish Airlines "LOT", Ryanair and Lufthansa, on the following routes:

-London (Stansted)
-London (Luton)
-Bristol
-Dublin
-Birmingham
-Frankfurt
-New York (JFK)
-New York (Newark)
-Warsaw

As the furthest located eastwards Polish communication airport, Rzeszów Jasionka Airport has the chance to develop further and open the door onto the world for our region.
